Pilates

was developed by Joseph H. Pilates throughout his life in Europe and brought to the U.S. when he moved here in 1926. He was a sickly child but was introduced to gymnastics, body-building, and martial arts while young, and he dedicated his life to fitness.

While we often think of pilates as requiring fancy equipment, the original method relied on nothing but the human body. Mat pilates is a wonderful practice to tone and strengthen muscles and to bring the body into balance. By increasing mind-body connections and awareness of our core, or “powerhouse”, we learn how to engage our muscles for optimal movement.
